Speculative work: A visual identity for a Scottish Smokehouse.
Once the busiest Herring port in Europe, Mallaig prided itself on it’s smokehouses but today only one smokery remains - Jaffy’s.
It was over 70 years ago that great-grandfather Jaffy learned the secrets to curing and smoking fish from his father as they followed the shoals of Herring around the coast of Scotland. This knowledge and process has remained unchanged through four generations and is the reason that Jaffy’s in the last smokery in Mallaig.
The marque originates from the rails the fish are hung on in the smokehouse. The four bars represent four generations with the central bar signifying knowledge and craft, which has been passed down through generations.
